Wonder White® Vitamins & Minerals
The following nutrients have been added to Wonder White Vitamins & Minerals Sandwich and Toast products:
Thiamin plays an essential role in the supply of energy to the tissues in our body. It is particularly important for helping the body to use carbohydrate foods – like bread. Plus Thiamin acts as a vital link for the use of protein, fat as well as carbohydrate in foods35. Thiamin has also been shown to help increase feelings of well-being5.
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin and a powerful antioxidant, which means it is able to protect cells against the damaging effects of free radicals35.
Vitamin B6 is involved in helping the body to use proteins and is needed for the formation of red blood cells35.
Supporting Improvements in Public Health
All Wonder White® products now use flour that is enriched with folate to help improve health and reduce the risk of neural tube defects. This change is part of a National initiative by Australian regulators and applies to all breads (apart from organic breads).
Wonder White® is now also a source of Iodine (through the use of iodised salt). This step will help reduce inadequate Iodine intakes in the Australian population and is also part of an initiative of Australian regulators to improve public health.
Health benefits of Resistant Starch
Considerable interest has focused on the benefits of the short chain fatty acid butyrate. In addition to it being a favoured energy source of colon cells48, butyrate has also been shown to facilitate other important physiological changes including:
- The capacity to reverse cancerous changes in laboratory studies14
- Provides a fuel source for the cells in our colon28
- Helps eliminate damaged cells28
Resistant Starch produces much higher levels of butyrate than other common fibres like wheat fibre8.
There is growing recognition of the important connection between diet and bacterial metabolism in the colon and specifically how the interaction can impact bowel health42.
Research with dietary components, like Resistant Starch, supports a direct link between diet, colonic bacteria and colon health, with recent animal studies indicating high Resistant Starch diets may help prevent serious bowel disease42.
Recent breakthrough research has linked the consumption of Resistant Starch with increased satiety or feelings of fullness.
A recent study with Resistant Starch showed that participants who ate a breakfast muffin with added Resistant Starch found that they were less hungry and stayed fuller for longer compared with those who ate muffins containing other types of fibre55.
According to one of the authors of the study, Professor Joanne Slavin from the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, University of Minnesota:
“Resistant Starch is an easy way to both boost the family’s fibre intake and prevent over-eating – without them even knowing it”.
It appears that Resistant Starch may impact the body’s appetite signals, which may be vital in helping manage body weight:
“Recognising appetite signals means you may be less likely to over-eat or snack on the wrong foods. Now we can enhance those signals by choosing the right foods, such as those with Resistant Starch.”
The findings from the University of Minnesota support early studies with animals23 that also showed Resistant Starch has the capacity to impact on appetite signals and potentially long term energy balance.
Controlling blood sugar high is beneficial to health and studies show that Resistant Starch is able to reduce blood sugar and insulin levels4.
Studies done with Hi-Maize® showed that it had the ability to moderate both blood sugar and insulin levels38.
The ability for Resistant Starch to deliver such an effect may be due to its ability to increase the body's sensitivity to insulin45,46.
